China (Melva) Murray White

Dance Theatre of Harlem

China (Melva) Murray White, a native Philadelphian, trained at the Judimar School under the tutelage of Marion Cuyjet and Sydney King. White became the first Black dancer to receive a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Ballet School. She was then a member of Dance Theatre of Harlem and later the owner and artistic director of Theatre Street Dance Academy, educator of the Pre-Professional Dance Program at Fort Hayes, and an OSU Dance Master’s alum.
