James Washington grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and trained at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He went on to become a principal dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem, a member of New Jersey Ballet Company, and a featured artist with the Staten Island Ballet.<\/div>\n
With DTH, Washington was in the original DTH casts of Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe\u2019s Sasanka<\/em> (1997), Arthur Mitchell\u2019s South African Suite<\/em> (1998), Dwight Rhoden\u2019s Twist<\/em> (1999), and Augustus van Heerden\u2019s Memento Mori<\/em> (2000) and Passion of the Blood<\/em> (2001).<\/div>\n
A 2004 Irish Times<\/em> review of a Dance Theatre of Harlem praised Washington\u2019s \u201cimpressive mastery of classical ballet, a glorious combination of lithe strength and disciplined grace.\u201d New York<\/em> Magazine said Washington \u201cepitomizes the physical and temperamental grace of DTH at its best.\u201d<\/div>\n

Washington later earned degrees in nursing from Hunter College. He works as a professor at Hostos Community College and a patient care supervisor at Bronxcare Hospital Center.<\/p>\n
