The American Ballet Theatre\u2019s all-Black Negro Unit, which was founded in 1940 as part of the Federal Theatre Project, included Carole Ash, along with Lawaune Kennard<\/a>, Lavinia Williams<\/a>, Anne Jones<\/a>, Dorothy Williams<\/a>, Elizabeth Thompson<\/a>, Evelyn Pilcher<\/a>,\u00a0Valerie Black<\/a>, Leonore \u201cAzelean\u201d Cox<\/a>, Edith Hurd<\/a>, Mabel Hart<\/a>, Maudelle Bass<\/a>, Clementine Collinwood<\/a>,\u00a0Bernice Willis<\/a>, and Muriel Cook<\/a>. The Negro Unit only performed one ballet during its existence\u2014Black Ritual<\/em> or Obeah<\/em>, which was choreographed by Agnes de Mille and premiered in 1940.<\/p>\n
