Johnson Gymnasium, Fisk University. This performance was part of the Southeastern Regional Ballet Festival. A reviewer praised the \u201cuncommonly talented and well trained group of youngsters\u201d and went on to observe that their \u201cwell developed bodies were not only disciplined to perform with firmness and grace, but the dancers were able to project a considerable range of expression through their attitudes and facial changes.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">The program was choreographed by <b>Doris W. Jones<\/b> with costumes by <b>Claire H. Haywood<\/b>. There were 15 dancers including <b>Hinton Battle<\/b>, <b>Robin Blair<\/b>, <b>Theressa Cassese<\/b>, <b>Leroy Cowan<\/b>, <b>Laura Fitz<\/b>, <b>Saundra Fortune<\/b>,<b> Nokomis Jefferson<\/b>, <b>Annie McBryde<\/b>, <b>Richard Moten<\/b>, <b>Peter Newman<\/b>, <b>Beryl Thornton<\/b>, and guest artist <b>Robert Davis<\/b>. The program included:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><i>To Fire and Flame (For Dr. Martin Luther King)<\/i> danced to the musical accompaniment of traditional spirituals; it was said to be \u201cof high level of interest and achievement.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><i>Bach Variations<\/i> was \u201chandsomely done by three couples.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><i>The Mendelssohn Suite<\/i> was \u201cvery well danced by <b>Theressa Cassese<\/b>, <b>Laura Fitz<\/b>, <b>Robin Blair<\/b>, and <b>Beryl Thornton<\/b>\u201d to a movement of <i>Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90<\/i> also known as the <i>\u201cItalian\u201d Symphony<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\">Grande Pas de Deux from <i>The Nutcracker<\/i> \u201cdanced with considerable style and technique by <b>Saundra [sic] Fortune<\/b>, elegantly partnered by guest artist <b>Robert Davis<\/b>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><i>Stravinsky\u2019s Ebony Concerto<\/i> was \u201cparticularly interesting musically as well as balletically\u2026.The black and gold of the men\u2019s costumes, and the vari-colored skirts of the girls were most appropriate, and the choreography\u2014though done in ballet terms\u2014had telling ethnic touches.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><i>Asha I<\/i> with live accompaniment by the Lloyd McNeill Jazz Quartet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Capitol Ballet Company held a master class taught by company Artistic Directors <b>Claire H. Company and the Tri-State Ballet Company in Philadelphia perform at the University of Delaware\u2019s Mitchell Hall as part of the Newark Art Festival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>1972<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>17th January<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The first annual benefit fashion-show luncheon for the Capitol Ballet Guild, Inc. was held in the north gallery of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Hosted by television actor Greg Morris, the show \u201cfeatured fashions by top American designers modeled by dancers from the Capitol Ballet Guild in specially-choreographed sections.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>14th and 15th April<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Capitol Ballet Company performed as part of the celebrations for Spelman College\u2019s 91st anniversary. The repertory included <i>Peter and the Wolf.<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>5th May<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Capitol Ballet Company performed Stravinsky\u2019s <i>Ebony Concerto <\/i>as part of \u201cCabaret Africain\u201d at the Shoreham Hotel held by friends of Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan). According to Civic Opera alumnus William DuPree, who went on to sing with the New York City Opera and the Metropolitan Opera studio, the company was \u201cthoroughly professional\u201d with productions of a \u201chigh level.\u201d Civic Opera\u2019s performances included Johann Strauss\u2019 <em>Die Fledermaus <\/em>(March 1 and 3, 1968);<em> The Merry Wives of Windsor <\/em>(April 1970), <em>Little Red Riding Hood<\/em>, and <em>Peter and the Wolf<\/em> (June 24, 1970) with the Capitol Ballet; Bizet\u2019s <em>Carmen<\/em> (July 1977); and Handel\u2019s <em>Messiah<\/em> (December 1998). Capitol Ballet dancers performed pieces named after numerous locations\u2014New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, Singapore, London, Scotland, Paris, Bulgaria, Haiti, Washington DC, Madrid, Dakar, Jamaica, and Rome\u2014with an imaginary airplane stopping in each location.
