Fisk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1865, barely six months after the end of the Civil War and just two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, three men\u2014John Ogden, the Reverend Erastus Milo Cravath, and the Reverend Edward P. Fisk of the Tennessee Freedmen&#8217;s Bureau, who provided the new institution with facilities in former Union Army barracks near the present site of Nashville&#8217;s Union Station. <strong>In these facilities Fisk convened its first classes on January 9, 1866.<\/strong> The first students ranged in age from seven to seventy, but shared common experiences of slavery and poverty and an extraordinary thirst for learning.<\/p>\n<p>The work of Fisk&#8217;s founders was sponsored by the American Missionary Association\u2014later part of the United Church of Christ, with which Fisk retains an affiliation today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16138\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16138 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mobballet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1372696322_history03-300x207-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mobballet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1372696322_history03-300x207-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mobballet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/1372696322_history03-300x207-1-230x159.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fisk&#8217;s world-famous Jubilee Singers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ogden, Cravath, and Smith, along with others in their movement, shared a dream of an educational institution that would be open to all, regardless of race, and that would measure itself by &#8220;the highest standards, not of Negro education, but of American education at its best.&#8221; Their dream was incorporated as Fisk University on August 22, 1867.<\/p>\n<div id=\"panel-1294-0-0-4\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_jlb-fisk-heading-text\" data-index=\"4\">\n<div class=\"so-widget-jlb-fisk-heading-text so-widget-jlb-fisk-heading-text-default-d75171398898\">\n<div class=\"intro-text\">\n<div class=\"regular-text\">\n<p>The tradition of excellence at Fisk has developed out of a history marked by struggle and uncertainty. Fisk&#8217;s world-famous Jubilee Singers\u00ae originated as a group of traveling students who set out from Nashville on October 6, 1871, taking the entire contents of the University treasury with them for travel expenses, praying that through their music they could somehow raise enough money to keep the doors of their debt-ridden school open.<\/p>\n<p>The singers struggled at first, but before long, their performances so electrified audiences that they traveled throughout the United States and Europe, moving to tears audiences that included William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Ulysses S. Grant, William Gladstone, Mark Twain, Johann Strauss, and Queen Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>To this day, each October 6, Fisk pauses to observe the anniversary of the singers&#8217; departure from campus in 1871. UD is the largest university in Delaware. It offers three associate&#8217;s programs, 148 bachelor&#8217;s programs, 121 master&#8217;s programs (with 13 joint degrees), and 55 doctoral programs across its eight colleges. The main campus is in Newark, with satellite campuses in Dover, the Wilmington area, Lewes, and Georgetown. It is considered a large institution with approximately 18,200 undergraduate and 4,200 graduate students. It is a privately governed university which receives public funding for being a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant state-supported research institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">UD is classified among &#8220;R1: Doctoral Universities \u2013 Very high research activity&#8221;. Rodney Sharp in 1930. A symmetrical, brick building, it has a two-story central block with a dome and, toward the rear, one-story wings extending north and south. The east and west elevations of the main block each have a pedimented gable above three recessed arches. Within these arches, three sets of double doors open onto the mall while one set opens toward the street. Recessed arches also appear on the one-story wings. H. Rodney Sharp is one of the most important figures in the development of the physical campus of the University of Delaware. A 1900 graduate, he became an active alumnus and fund raiser. On the Board of Trustees, he served first as chair of the Committee on Planning and Development and later as chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He introduced major benefactor Pierre S. du Pont to the university (see Wolf Hall profile), negotiated purchase of the property south of Main Street, chose Marian Coffin to landscape the campus and reviewed designs for new buildings as late as 1963. His financial contributions to the university eventually exceeded even those of Pierre S. du Pont. Sharp insisted that Mitchell Hall be named for Samuel Chiles Mitchell, president of Delaware College from 1914 to 1920. Consultants from the Yale drama department helped plan the building, which served as a concert hall, theater and auditorium. Pierre S. du Pont donated a pipe organ for use in the new space. Mitchell Hall became a regional theater in Delaware, hosting performances by university, community and traveling companies.
