From Ballet to Broadway and Black and Candace Caldwell<\/h2>\n

Candace Caldwell was a member of two main ballet companies including New York’s Ballet Theatre as well as\u00a0Ward Fleming’s<\/a> New York Negro Ballet<\/a>. She performed in a number of performances with the New York Negro Ballet along with another famous black dancer, Georgia Collins<\/a>. Along with the notable Mardi Gras<\/em>, she also performed in dances choreographed by Louis Johnson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Caldwell was one of the main dancers in The Road of the Phoebe Snow<\/em>, hosted at Jacob\u2019s Pillow<\/a> in 1960. She performed in the production along with Collins. Talley Beatty<\/a> was her choreographer. She also was part of the cast of the Broadway show, The Happiest Girl in the World\u00a0<\/em>in 1961.<\/span><\/p>\n

Candace Caldwell, a native New Yorker, was a student at New York\u2019s Ballet Theatre and an original member of Ward Fleming<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0New York Negro Ballet<\/a>. She toured with the company through England, Scotland, and Wales. New York\u2019s\u00a0Daily News<\/em>\u00a0reported in 1957 that Caldwell acted as \u201cMount Vernon\u2019s unofficial ambassador of good will\u201d on the tour, visiting the mayors of London and Dublin.<\/p>\n
