The Sydney-Marion School of Dance was founded in 1946 by Sydney King<\/a><\/strong> and Marion Cuyjet<\/a> <\/strong>in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Despite the company lasting less than two years, ending in 1948, King and Cuyjet marked the start of a lineage of Black ballet dancers in Philadelphia, one of whom, receiving national and international recognition, was Billy Wilson. When the pair split in 1948, Wilson left with King to continue training.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sydney-Marion School of Dance was founded by friends Sydney King and Marion Cuyjet in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946. Although short-lived, the company lasting less than two years, King and Cuyjet marked the start of a lineage of Black ballet dancers in Philadelphia. They have changed the way the world views race both on the stage and off, both pedagogically and artistically. Training hundreds of Black dancers for six decades, many of their students went on to receive national and international recognition in the dance world.<\/p>\n
