Barbara Wright trained at the Jones-Haywood School and the School of American Ballet\u2019s summer intensive (concurrently with Louis Johnson<\/a>, Arthur Mitchell<\/a>, Georgia Collins<\/a>, and Michaelyn Jackson<\/a>). As a member of New York Negro Ballet, she performed pieces including Ernest Parham\u2019s Mardi <\/em>Gras<\/em> and Louis Johnson\u2019s Variations<\/em>. She left the company to perform as an \u201cIslander\u201d in the 1957 Broadway production of Jamaica<\/em>. This production also included Billy Wilson<\/a>, Alvin Ailey, Lena Horne, Charles Moore<\/a>, Nat Horne<\/a>, and Jane Craddock<\/a>. In a 2018 Ballet Review<\/em> interview, Louis Johnson listed Wright as one of the remarkable Black dancers who preceded those of Dance Theatre of Harlem.<\/p>\n
