Lowell Smith was born in Memphis, Tennessee and received his training from North Carolina School of the Arts. He danced with Long Island\u2019s Eglevsky Ballet before joining Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1976.<\/div>\n
Smith was in the original DTH casts of Royston Maldoom\u2019s Invasion<\/em> (1978), Robert North\u2019s Troy Game<\/em> (1978), Carlos Carvajal\u2019s Shapes of Evening<\/em> (1978) and Secret Silence<\/em> (1979), Choo San Goh\u2019s Variations Serieuses<\/em> (1978), George Balanchine\u2019s The Four Temperaments<\/em> (1979) and Serenade<\/em> (1979), Carmen de Lavallade<\/a>\u2019s Sensemaya<\/em> (1979), Billy Wilson<\/a>\u2019s Mirage (The Games People Play)<\/em> (1979), Glen Tetley\u2019s Greening<\/em> (1980), Michel Fokine\u2019s Scheherazade<\/em> (1981), Valerie Bettis\u2019 A Streetcar Named Desire<\/em> (1982), Geoffrey Holder<\/a>\u2019s Banda<\/em> (1982), Domy Reiter-Soffer\u2019s Equus: The Ballet<\/em> (1982), David Lichine\u2019s Graduation Ball<\/em>\u00a0(1983), Agnes de Mille<\/a>\u2019s Fall River Legend<\/em> (1983), Frederic Franklin<\/a>\u2019s Sylvia Pas de Deux<\/em> (1983), Loyce Houlton\u2019s Wingborne<\/em> (1983), Michael Smuin\u2019s Songs of Mahler<\/em> (1984) and A Song for Dead Warriors<\/em> (1993), Creole Giselle<\/em> (1984, at the London Coliseum), Garth Fagan\u2019s Footprints Dressed in Red<\/em> (1986), Eugene Loring\u2019s Billy the Kid<\/em> (1988), Arthur Mitchell<\/a>\u2019s John Henry<\/em> (1988), and Alvin Ailey\u2019s The River<\/em> (1993).<\/div>\n
Smith danced the role of Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire<\/em>, which was filmed for PBS\u2019s Dance in America<\/em> series in 1986, and Hilarion in the film version of Creole Giselle<\/em>.<\/div>\n
When Arthur Mitchell announced DTH lay-offs in 1990, Smith began taking fashion illustration classes at the New School as well as acting classes. But he was able to return to the company before his retirement from DTH in 1993.<\/div>\n
Smith choreographed A Pas de Deux for Phrygia and Spartacus<\/em> for DTH in 2001, a performance which premiered at New York\u2019s City Center and starred Melissa Morissey and Duncan Cooper<\/a>.<\/div>\n
Smith taught for many years at Broadway Dance Center and was involved with DTH\u2019s school.<\/div>\n
In 2007, Smith passed away at the age of 56 due to lung cancer. He is remembered as a dancer who \u201cused precise mastery of classical ballet and exquisite expressiveness of body and face to convey emotions from tranquility to charged passion\u201d (The New York Times<\/em>, 2007).<\/div>\n
