After graduating from the Johannesburg Dance Foundation, a program for children from the townships of South Africa, in 1989, Ntsikelelo Cekwana danced with the PACT Dance Company and the NAPAC Dance Company, where he was also choreographer-in-residence from 1994 to 1996.
He won top honors for choreography in the 1995 International Ballet Competition in Finland, where Washington Ballet’s founder and artistic director, Mary Day, saw his duet, “Brother, Brother.” Her company gave the work its North American premiere in the 1995-1996 season, and she asked him for a larger piece for the 20th anniversary season.
