Jonathan Philbert from New York City, attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts. While there, he attended the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of American Ballet Theatre under the direction of Franco Devita. There, he was able to train with a wide variety is teachers as well as perform with the company at the Metropolitan Opera House and on tour to for Nutcracker in California. After 4 years, he joined the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company in Chicago where he danced various works such as Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, Pas Couple in Napoli, and Viva Vivaldi by Gerald Arpino. Mr. Philbert was presented with the opportunity to dance with the main company in Nutcracker for Christopher Wheeldon’s New Nutcracker and go on tour to NYC to perform Romeo and Juliet. Following his time in Chicago, he was contracted to Atlanta Ballet by artistic director Gennadi Nedvigin. There he performed various works by choreographers such as Yuri Possokhov, Liam Scarlett, Ricardo Amarante, and Yuri Yanowsky. This will be Mr. Philbert’s first season with New Jersey Ballet.
Philbert was one of 11 Black ballet dancers from around the world selected by Theresa Ruth Howard to create and perform in the world premiere of Donald Byrd’s From Other Suns, as part of The Kennedy Center’s Reframing the Narrative.
