Jhe Russell was born ca. 1976 and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a child, Russell saw Rudolf Nureyev perform with the Boston Ballet in their production of Don Quixote and knew that he had to pursue ballet. He then trained at the Boston Ballet School, School of American Ballet, Walnut Hill, and the National Ballet School of Canada.
Russell has performed with several prominent companies: Northern Ballet, Boston Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Bucharest Opera, North Carolina Dance Theatre, National Ballet of Canada, and Béjart Ballet Lausanne.
Russell was awarded first place at the 5th International Erik Bruhn Competition in 1999 and appeared on the cover of Toronto’s The Dance Current in December of the same year.
Russell retired from his performing career ca. 2014 and continued his work in ballet as a choreographer and teacher. He has created pieces for the National Ballet of Canada, National Ballet School of Canada, and Béjart Ballet Lausanne and taught for the Royal Ballet, Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Georgia University, and Iowa University.
