Patrick King was born on July 7, 1961 in the West Indies. King started dancing when he was seven years old and trained at the Dance Theatre of Harlem School for eight years. He became a member of the company before beginning a career in television and film. King was cast as a principal dancer in the 1980 classic movie Fame and worked for the Italian public broadcasting company Rai.

King also performed and created for Cirque de Soleil in the early 2000s and danced with Cullberg Ballet, a Swedish contemporary dance company based in Stockholm, Sweden.
He has choreographed for Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Venice Film Festival, and the 17th Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, among others.
