Janise Turner was born ca. 1948 and grew up in Washington D.C. She performed with the Capitol Ballet on May 29, 1964 at the Cramton Auditorium at Howard University. The company performed Doris Jones’ Color, Bach for Six, and Flair for Movement

Turner also appeared alongside James Thurston at the Jones-Haywood School’s annual show, performing the lead role in a scene from Swan Lake at only 13 years old. The Pittsburgh Courier said that she “performed with a maturity that made devotees of the dance forget her tender years.”
