San Fransisco Ballet: Corps de Ballet (2022-present)
Angela Watson, American Ballerina, hails from Oakland, California San Francisco Bay Area and began training in ballet in 2014 with Oakland School for the Arts School of Dance when she was 12 under the direction of Reginald Ray Savage, Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer.
In 2016, after the vigorous National Ballet Tour competition which was enthusiastically sanctioned by her award-winning Artistic Director Mr. Savage, principal choreographer of Savage Jazz Dance Company, Angela was awarded a full scholarship to attended San Francisco Ballet School Summer Intensive, receiving 8 other National Ballet Tour Competition offers. Angela was hand-picked and invited by San Francisco Ballet School Director Patrick Armand to train year-round on an Artistic Merit Scholarship and was named the San Francisco Ballet David Palmer Artistic Student of the year and having been named Student Scholar for 6 consecutive years, she has now become the San Francisco Ballet David Palmer Scholar (funded by the Carol Emory/Wingate Foundation).
She was cast by Helgi Tomasson, San Francisco Ballet Artistic Director, to dance the Nutcracker Ballet the same year in the leading character role of “Clara” and danced the role for two consecutive seasons representing the only African-Native American to ever dance the role for the company, the only African-American to dance the role in over 30 years and the only African-American to dance the role for 2 consecutive seasons in the 75 year history of the San Francisco Ballet Nutcracker.
Angela also performed as the Nutcracker’s Clara on the 125th Anniversary of the World Premiere of this cherished and beloved ballet, first danced by Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892 and she was introduced to ABT Principal Dancer Misty Copeland who was also dancing Nutcracker for the Los Angeles Ballet.Source:
