Courtney Cochran was born in Sacramento, CA where she trained with Crockett Deane Ballet and Sacramento Ballet. Cochran continued her training with Alonzo King LINES’ BFA Program directed by Marina Hotchkiss and Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Professional Training Program directed by Robert Garland. In 2013, Cochran moved to New York City. There, she danced for four seasons with Brooklyn Ballet, performing various roles in The Nutcracker, Les Sylphides, The Four Temperaments, Pas de Quatre, and more. She has also been a guest artist with Collage Dance Collective, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Gleich Dances, Sierra Nevada Ballet, and The Black Iris Project. Cochran has been on faculty at Brooklyn Ballet, The Billie Holiday Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Harlem School of the Arts, and in 2021 joined the teaching faculty at American Ballet Theatre. She also received her Pilates certification in 2019 and teaches Pilates both in person and online.

In 2008, Cochran was chosen as an emerging choreographer for Regional Dance America Festival where she debuted her first work. She continued her creative explorations, making choreography for DTH’s Professional Training Program and presenting work on multiple seasons of Brooklyn Ballet’s First Look festival and Norte Maar’s CounterPointe performance series. Fall 2019, Cochran was chosen for Dance Lab New York and The Joyce Theatre Foundation Lab Cycle: Female Choreographers of Color in Ballet. Through this program, Cochran’s work was presented at the Works & Process series at the Guggenheim Museum. In 2020 she was chosen to create a work for The Guggenheim’s Works & Process Artist (WPA) Virtual Commissions. She created “From cage of teeth and jaw” in collaboration with Lady Brion and Ha Vo, which featured her choreography and herself as performer.
