In addition to choreographing for Broadway and operas, Johnson also choreographed for films. One of his most notable films is The Wiz (1978), an all-Black film adaptation based on the classic children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Before that, Johnson also choreographed Cotton Comes to Harlem in 1970.
