Activations Towards Embodiment

Pathways to Performance Choreographic Program (PTP):

Today there are numerous Black contemporary and modern choreographers being commissioned to create work for ballet companies, but few Black ballet choreographers being given equal opportunities. Our mission is to not allow the ballet field to create a subcategory (Modern/contemporary) for Black choreographers in the ballet space.

Our next focus is on Black ballet choreographers and those of color. In keeping with MoBBallet’s 360˚ approach to transforming the field of ballet, PTP is designed to not only identify, but cultivate and mentor choreographers of color, specifically Black choreographers, with the intention of providing concrete opportunities for them to create work and have it presented on the mainstage.

Phase I: The pilot program of PTP launched in August 2022 at the MoBBallet Symposium M.I.A which was underwritten by Arts, Equity & Education Fund. It had three program facilitators, the industry professionals Donald Byrd, Jennifer Archibald, and Helen Pickett. There were eight participant choreographers, four of whom were fellows. Our fellows were granted full scholarships and the opportunity to choreograph on the Symposium’s advanced dancers.

Phase II : The goal is for our fellows to receive choreographic commissions (Professional Division, Second Company or Main Company). We are pleased to announce that the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has commissioned two of the fellows to choreograph both in the Company and the school as a part of their Fast Forward and Aspirant choreographic series!! Our goal is to create 3 - 4 residencies from January 2023 to July 2024 in preparation for the Kennedy Center season, a tentative host for presentation of this work. These residencies could be independently presented by MoBBallet or hosted by a C2EC member organization.

Phase III: Kennedy Center Residency and Eisenhower Theater season (June 2024) . We are proposing this program to other presenting bodies: Jacob’s Pillow, The Joyce Theater, and Broward County Theater.

Through this process, not only will participants’ work be evaluated by artistic directors and receive feedback, they will have an unprecedented opportunity to begin to develop personal relationships with them. MoBBallet is committed to nurturing and cultivating choreographers whose first language is ballet. We are investing in makers whose works are reflective of that and created in the style of classical, neoclassical, or contemporary ballet.

PTP will provide access, education, and mentorship, which will result in commissions and finally in exposure on some of the most prestigious stages in America. We are thrilled to announce that we have secured a culminating residency and performance dates in June 2024 at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater in Washington DC with plans for a return to their opera house stage in 2025 or 2026.

Members who participate in PTP will also have an opportunity for their company either to be represented or presented at the Kennedy Center through a PTP choreographic work.

Using the model of organizational engagement developed during the curation of Reframing the Narrative, as an activation, PTP will engage a number of departments across participating organizations including: Artistic (company/school), Development, Marketing, Communications, and Community Engagement, as we craft wraparound events, workshops, and panels, as well as crafting language to communications to promote the residencies and performances. In addition to creating ballets, PTP will train its choreographic fellows on how to create a healthy and culturally competent work environment for the dancers Their model will be the Reframing the Narrative Residency format, which works to create a collaborative and supportive work environment and includes time for everyone in the process to debrief periodically on the process.

Auxiliary Meetings

  • Board convenings (2 per year)
  • Board education is paramount as they are the governing body and should be intimately involved in the shifting culture and vision of the organizational identity. They should act as the highest level of accountability; however, if they are unaware of the existing culture and I.D.E.A. work being done, how can they support it or hold leaders' feet to the fire?

  • Dancer Forums (4 per year)
  • Dancers should not only be privy to the I.D.E.A. work that is being done organization-wide, but they should be expected to participate in it. They, too, are the architects of the culture in the studio, in dressing rooms, and on stage. They should also have a clear idea of the appropriate ways of advocating for themselves and supporting the work. In addition, they should have a safe space to process their lived experiences within their respective organizations and the field at large.

  • Production and Technical Departments (2-4 per year)
  • Production and Technical Departments are just as much a part of the culture as any other department. They often are an afterthought when it comes to organizational culture and I.D.E.A. training, yet it is often in these spaces (hair, make-up, wardrobe, and backstage) that dancers of color experience microaggressions. Wardrobe, hair, and make-up are spaces of intense gatekeeping! It is vital that they are folded into this work with intention and specificity.

Recognizing that organizations are at various stages of understanding and activation, the C2EC has created a two tiered membership structure to better address the needs of our members so we can meet them where they are.
