CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM PRESENTATION PROPOSALS

MoBBallet Symposium/MIA: Motivation. Innovation. Activation.

August 7 – 13th, 2022

Sanctuary of the Arts Coral Gables, Miami, FL

CALL FOR SYMPOSIUM PRESENTATION PROPOSALS

MoBBallet:Motivation, Innovation, Activation (MIA) will not just  break the mold, it will build a new one by drafting a blueprint for ballet and beyond. Using this blueprint from our in person and digital symposiums, MoBBallet/MIA will offer high caliber dance training and mentoring to advanced and intermediate dancers by faculty and mentors that look like them. Additionally, developmental courses for dance educators and studio owners led by industry professionals will be offered. In keeping with our digital symposium we have created a forum for scholarship which will host workshops and panels focused on dance history, anti-racist and inclusive dance and academic pedagogy, aesthetics and I.D.E.A., social justice and more. Discussions about the state of the art will offer opportunities for students, dance educators, and scholars to liaise with Ballet leadership, where they can put their I.D.E.A. learnings to practice by engaging with the diversity of the black dance community. In addition, a Choreography program will be introduced to the curriculum. Scholarship will be represented as dance educators (both studio and collegiate) will have a platform to present as well.

Symposium Submissions may relate to the following topics:

  • Anti-racist and inclusive pedagogy
  • Decolonizing Ballet
  • Organizational and department culture
  • Aesthetics in ballet and training
  • Rethinking pedagogy and curriculum
  • I.D.E.A. in Ballet
  • Black dance archives and history

About MoBBallet (MoBB)

Launched in 2015, MoBBallet (MoBB) preserves, presents, and promotes the contributions and stories of Black artists in the field of Ballet, illustrating that they are an integral part of dance history at large. Our mission is to illuminate the lesser-known history and legacies of international professional Black ballet artists that have been muted, or oftentimes eradicated from the larger canon of dance history. MoBBallet reinstates these contributions and achievements in our ever-expanding historical Timeline, Roll Call and Constellation Project all of which invokes the sentiment of a digital museum. We house “traditional” archival material, as well as oral histories, the memoirs of Blacks in Ballet dancers, through the production of mini-documentaries that capture not only their artistry, but their humanity. MoBBallet curates and facilitates forums for stimulating and dynamic conversations about race, diversity, equity, inclusion and art.

~We are only as strong as our stories, therefore they must be told and preserved~.
