Louis Johnson is one of the many notable alumni who began their ballet training at the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet. With exceptional artistic talents, as well as gymnastic and dancing talents, he enrolled when he was in high school.

The Jones-Haywood Dance School, originally named the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet, was founded in 1941 by Doris W. Jones and Claire H. Haywood. It is the oldest predominantly African-American dance school in DC, and primarily offers classical ballet and tap. Notable alum of the school include Chita Rivera, Louis Johnson, Sylvester Campbell, and Hinton Battle. The school offers classes from faculty members with ties to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Howard University, and more. As of 2020, the school is directed by Sandra Fortune-Green, a former student of Jones and Haywood.
